1. a) If a cell phone broadcasts a microwave signal at 3 GHz, what is the wavelength of the resulting wave?
b) What size mesh would you need for a screen on the door of a microwave oven, so you could look inside, but not let microwaves out?

2. What color shirt, black or white, do you want to wear on a cold day? Explain (using wave properties and specific EM waves).

Okay, so for the 1a, I got (3 x 10^8) / (3 x 10^9) = 0.1m for the wavelength.
I'm a bit confused as to how to get the answer for 1b.
For 2, I know that black is better because black absorbs light a lot better than white does, but I need to include specific EM waves.

Help, anybody?

1. Use c = lambda*freq. c - speed of light and frequency is given, calculate wavelength.
For part b, you would want your screen mesh holes to be less than the wavelength of a microwave. Use the microwave length from part a to estimate the size.

2. White indicates that what we see is the combination of many wavelengths of light reflected back from the shirt. Black means the shirt absorbed all the wavelengths and we don't get much light reflected back to us.
