Is there a way to remove rust from the auger in an ice maker ?

I keep getting a rust-like buildup on the ice auger (the metal, pigtail shaped rod which moves ice towards the door) in the ice machine on a GE fridge (less than 5 years old).
I looked in the owner's manual and they suggest that the auger is only 'chrome plated' and this is 'normal' rusting.
Why wouldn't they make the auger out of stainless steel ?

Will the auger come out??? If so try some muratic acid to remove the rust, be careful, it is dangerous to use this product without protection. See if you local dealer has a replacement part for that style auger, may be the next move and change to stainless steel or hard plastic. If the auger does not come out, the rust will not hurt, but the chromium plating maybe a concern. Good luck
